Power

How can I become more explosive?

If you want to become more explosive, doing hundreds of jumps isn't automatically the answer. Explosiveness is about being able to produce useful force quickly. That shows up when you accelerate, jump, change direction, react and make powerful movements in sport.

Athlete producing force in a performance session

You need something to produce

Power needs a physical foundation. If you cannot produce enough force, there is only so much explosive output available. That is why appropriate strength development can be important.

But strength isn't enough

We regularly see athletes who are strong in the gym but don't necessarily look explosive on the field or court. Why? Because strength has to be expressed quickly. It also needs to connect with good movement and mechanics.

Technique matters

Working harder isn't always the answer. The body needs to be in good positions to use force effectively. So we look at strength, speed, movement, mechanics, coordination — and the relationship between them.

What we look for at ASP

The important question isn't: 'Is this athlete explosive?' It's: 'What is stopping them from becoming more explosive?'

One athlete may need strength. Another may need to express existing strength faster. Another may need better movement. That determines the training.

Measure it

If explosiveness is a goal, you should also be able to see whether it is improving. That's why having a baseline matters.

How ASP approaches it

Don't just work harder. Produce more.

Understand what is limiting your power and target it properly.
