Speed vs agility — what's the difference?
Speed is mainly about how quickly you can move. Agility is about how effectively you can react, control your body, change direction and accelerate again. In sport, you normally need both.

Speed gets you there
Think about breaking into space, getting to the ball first, closing down an opponent, recovering defensively. Those moments require acceleration and speed.
But very few sports allow you to simply run in a straight line.
Agility helps you deal with what happens next
The game changes. An opponent moves. The ball changes direction. You need to stop. Turn. React. Move again. That is where agility comes in.
One thing parents often overlook: braking
Everyone loves acceleration. But before an athlete can change direction effectively, they usually need to control the speed they already have.
Poor braking can make an otherwise quick athlete look slow during changes of direction. At ASP, we therefore look at both sides: how well can you accelerate, and how well can you control that speed?
Can someone be fast but not agile?
Definitely. We see athletes who are extremely quick in a straight line but struggle when they have to change direction. We also see athletes who move beautifully laterally but don't have enough acceleration. Different problem. Different development need.
What does your sport demand?
A soccer player's movement demands aren't identical to a tennis player's. A rugby player is different again. That is why we develop the physical athlete while still considering the demands of their sport.
How ASP approaches it
Speed gets you there. Agility helps you respond.
If you're unsure which quality is limiting performance, start by measuring it.
